Coastal Holidays in Dorset |

Choose from a variety of accommodation to suit your stay

With the Jurassic Coast Wold Heritage Site dominating the 100 miles of coastline in Dorset, coastal holidays are not only popular, they are magical too! The area boasts a ‘living coast’ which washes up fossils regularly thanks to the exposed coastline which dates back through the Jurassic, Triassic and Cretaceous periods.

Today for the lucky visitors to the coast, this means that treasure hunts for fossils can add a magical element to any family Dorset holiday, as who knows when the very next dinosaur fossil will be found. Did you know, the Scelidosaurus, the only dinosaur fossil to be found in the South West was found at Charmouth here in Dorset? Find out more at the Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre, a great way to spend an hour or two learning about this historic coastline.

Families, couples and groups alike will enjoy the many beaches which are perfect for spending the day splashing about, building sandcastles and eating ice creams on deck chairs. Some of the best locations for beach holidays include Weymouth and Swanage, where mums and dads can relax, -while the little ones play in the soft sand and paddle in the sea. Not forgetting Lyme Regis and West Bay, with its iconic cliffs, the perfect background for a family photo.

Couples might prefer the quiet coves for moonlight walks, the South West Coast Path for brisk outings and the vibrant seaside towns for designer boutique hotels and cosy B&B’s. Poole, Bournemouth and Christchurch all offer waterside breaks which are full of fun and excitement. In many of these locations you’ll find a fantastic nightlife, with restaurants and bars, to keep you entertained in the evenings.

Other icons of the coast include the Old Harry Rocks and Durdle Door at Lulworth Cove. It is here in Lulworth Cove, that during the last weekend in July you will find Camp Bestival, for a festival camping experience by the sea with the family. Or instead, for lovers of the award winning TV drama Broadchurch, why not visit the location of the same name where it was filmed?

Wherever you stay, you can access much of the coast via the South West Coast Path including the Isle of Portland, where you can take in the red and white stripes of Portland Bill. Walking is a wonderful way to take in some of the spectacular scenery, make sure to look out for the wildlife too!
