Unrivalled charm, famous hills and history

Visit Shaftesbury

Perched high on a hill above Dorset’s Blackmore Vale and commanding some of the most spectacular views, Shaftesbury is a gorgeous, bustling, market town immortalised in the works of Thomas Hardy, and perhaps most famously the Hovis bread commercial. A romantic sight

The lovely town of Shaftesbury provides a wealth of things to see and do with its old churches, wonderful houses and two museums. Shaftesbury is perhaps most renowned for Gold Hill - or ‘Hovis Hill’ - the steep, cobbled, picturesque street featured in the 1973 ‘Boy on a Bike’ television advertisement. The view from the top has been described as “one of the most romantic sights in England.”

After drinking in the spectacular views and sampling the other delights that Shaftesbury has to offer such as the historic Saxonic Shaftesbury Abbey and its tranquil gardens or the regular Thursday markets as well as numerous independent shops, you might like to take an afternoon tea in a pretty tea shop, enjoy some grub at one of the traditional pubs or a meal at one of the wonderful restaurants.
