Lyme Regis, a fantastic seaside town in West Dorset, is found on the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site and is renowned for the fossils that have been found here over the years. The town has so much to see and do that you will need a quite a bit of time to explore it all and appreciate what is there. There are plenty of places to dine out, get a snack or enjoy a coffee and some homemade cake in the town centre or near the water’s edge. The town also boasts a cinema, theatre, art galleries and a museum so finding something to do will never be an issue.

Lyme Regis has a lot of history as well as a vibrant present thanks in part to the community’s efforts to support the local shops, the museum and in particular the annual Lyme Regis Carnival and Regatta and the Lyme Regis Fossil Festival. There is nearly always an event happening somewhere in the area and if you arrive on a quiet day then a walking tour of the town is a great way to get to know the place.

The famous harbour named The Cobb is a pretty area to browse when it is full of boats and busy with activity. The views from this part of town have provided inspiration for novelists such as Jane Austin and are well worth the walk. The Cobb is a great place from which to take a boat trip out along the remarkable coastline for some fishing or cruising. The town is also home to the Lyme Regis Golf Club which is widely regarded as one of the finest golf courses in the South West. Keen golfers, as well as first timers, will be able to test their skills on a challenging yet rewarding course that offers up stunning coastal views.

The coastline plays a dramatic and impressive part in the life of Lyme Regis; the whole stretch of coastline is world famous for offering up a wide variety of fossils from its ever eroding cliff faces and beaches. Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre nearby will be able to offer help and advice for fossil hunting fun.

Lyme Regis has some strong literary links, and features heavily in a number of popular works such as Jane Austen’s Persuasion and The French Lieutenant’s Woman written by John Fowles. The 1981 film of The French Lieutenant’s Woman, featuring Meryl Streep, was partly filmed in Lyme Regis.
