Surrounded by rolling countryside, the hamlet of Melbury Osmond is ideally placed for touring with easy access to the A37. Melbury Osmond is in a conservation area surrounding the Melbury Estate with many thatched houses. There are many attractions to explore in the local area, including Sherborne (9.2 miles) with its abbey and two castles, Montacute House (11 miles), Yeovilton Fleet Air Arm Museum (13 miles), Haynes Motor Museum (15 miles) and the Cerne Abbas Giant (10 miles). Those wishing to visit the Jurassic Coast will enjoy the many beaches, pretty villages, towns and coves within reach such as Abbotsbury, West Bay, Bridport, Weymouth and Lyme Regis all within 25 miles.. The neighbouring village of Evershot is less than a mile away via Melbury Park, or you can head 3 miles to Yetminster where there is a shop selling essential supplies. Supermarket and other substantial shopping are available in Sherborne, Dorchester and Yeovil.

The cottage itself was built in the times of Henry VIII. Thomas Hardy’s parents were married at the village church a stone’s throw from the cottage. As is the country way, enter into the cottage via the back door, which will take you into a welcoming hallway with space to leave muddy boots and wet coats. To the left is a contemporary shower room, newly fitted in 2023 with a step up into a generous shower and a WC. Just next door is the ground floor double bedroom and there is an inviting lounge just opposite. This sociable room has openings into the kitchen and the dining area and fabulous original features including a decorative inglenook. The kitchen/diner completes the ground floor accommodation and is a great spot to enjoy leisurely meals. Heading back into the hallway you'll find a very steep and winding cottage style staircase, which rises to the first floor. Should you need to work whilst you're away, there is a spacious landing with a study area. Also on this floor are the remaining two double bedrooms, a single and the cosy bathroom. Please note that due to the age of the property there are low beams, uneven floors and areas of restricted head height throughout, which only adds to the character and charm. This is of particular note in the kitchen, first floor double bedroom and the bathroom.

Take the main entrance door back outside and you’ll find the beautiful cottage style garden. Divided into areas with space to sit and relax, you can enjoy wandering up through the different levels, admiring the established planting as you go. At the top is a level lawn perfect for picnics, an orchard area, a gravel garden, and enclosed pond.

  • 4 bedrooms - 3 doubles and 1 single (with option of extra trundle single bed or conversion into double, available on request)
  • 2 bathrooms - 1 shower room with WC and 1 bathroom with small free standing bath and WC
  • Electric range cooker, combination microwave oven, fridge/freezer dishwasher and washing machine - (please note kitchen pictures reflect old rayburn cooker which has been replaced with an electric range cooker)
  • TV available in the lounge
  • Cottage style enclosed garden with furniture, BBQ, areas of lawn, flower beds and borders, plus a orchard area and vegetable garden
  • Off-road parking for 3 cars available
  • Beach 18 miles, shop and pub 3 miles
  • Sleeps 7+1
  • The village has a good children's play area behind the village hall next to the tennis court. Guests at the cottage have membership of the tennis court during their stay. Details for booking and access are with the guest instructions. Please bring your own tennis equipment

Sterndale Cottage is picture postcard pretty in a quiet, lovely Dorset village, with a Thomas Hardy connection. The stairs inside are steep and the beams very low, so low I walked right into one (and Im only 56!), so you have to be aware of the varying ceiling heights at all times. The garden was lovely, especially in good weather, with a cheery blRead moreue table big enough for a large family. The stone paving, however, was very uneven and hazardous for the very old or very young. Hide

Such a lovely cottage. Felt cosy and safe. Comfy beds and such a fab garden. The garden should be shown off more on the website. We had a great time playing badminton on the grass.

The house is located in a quiet village. It is a perfect location for trips to Dorset, Sommerset, ... for a mixure of nature and historic experineces. At the back of the house there is a well-maintained large garden. The long history of the house can be found in several details all over. To stay in house only is not a problem because of four bedrooRead morems, a nice living room and a well equiped kitchen. We (family of four) enjoyed our stay very much and recommend the cottage to families. Hide

We had a fabulous week at Sterndale Cottage. The cottage itself was beautiful, we particularly loved the garden (we were very lucky with the weather and sat outside on several evenings). Everything was very cosy and well looked after inside. The area is perfect as a base for exploring Dorset - the coast only about 40 minutes away. We went for some Read morelovely local walks with the dogs. The village of Melbury Osmund is very peaceful and picturesque. Hide
