East Melbury is a small village in North Dorset, set against absolutely stunning countryside, part of which is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The village is surrounded by many more charming towns and villages including Shaftesbury, Blandford Forum and Sturminster Newton.

Near to East Melbury is Competon Abbas Airfield, a wonderful airfield in the heart of the Dorset countryside which boasts more than just a runaway. A number of experience days are available where you can spend the day cruising the stunning Dorset countryside in a classic car or motorbike before heading to the airfield and marvelling at the beauty from the sky. Also at the airfield you can take your first steps to becoming a pilot with their flying courses or simply enjoy a meal at the on-site restaurant.

Fontewell and Melbury Down is a National Trust owned area of land on the outskirts of the village and is a must visit on an East Melbury holiday. The large expanse of natural beauty is perfect for a long relaxing walk with views that stretch for mile-upon-mile across the Blackmore Vale. If you head to Melbury Beacon you’ll be treated to the most spectacular of these views standing 863 feet above sea level.

Melbury Wood has provided inspiration for many artists over the years and you may find a representation of the area in one of the art galleries in the wider Dorset area. Writers have taken a lot of inspiration from this part of Dorset including Thomas Hardy and T.E Lawrence, both who owned houses in the county.

The neighbouring towns and villages offer plenty more to see and do while on holiday in East Melbury. Shaftesbury is just ten minutes away by car and is home to two museums telling the story of this historic part of Dorset. Gold Hill Museum is found at the top of Gold Hill, which was made famous by the Hovis commercial filmed there in 1973, with the other museum being Shaftesbury Abbey Museum and Garden.

Blandford Forum is home to the Royal Signals Museum and Blandford Forum Town Museum which are well worth a visit while on holiday in East Melbury. Hall & Woodhouse Brewery is also found here and is where a number of ales are brewed including Tangle Foot, Golden Champion and Fursty Ferret.
