The Isle of Portland is a small tied island that lies in the South West of Dorset, although not really an island, Portland is reached via a narrow causeway from Chesil Beach. The peninsula has been a lookout point for centuries and has always had lighthouses to help sailors navigate safely past the rocks. If you’re looking for a coastal location that allows you to escape and truly unwind during your Dorset holiday, then Portland is certain to accommodate you.

Today the iconic red and white stripe of the Portland Bill lighthouse is operated by remote control, another of the three lighthouses on the island has been converted into a home and the third has become a bird observatory and visitor’s centre. Much of the island is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and the coastal position means that almost wherever you are you are reminded of the open waters and coastline that surround you on a visit to the Isle. The unique geology of the island and its position are ideal for a wide variety of birds, animals and plant life so if you fancy doing a little exploring during your holiday in Dorset, then Portland could be the perfect destination for you.

Portland harbour is a man-made harbour which sits between the main land and Portland and is presided over by the imposing Portland Castle which was originally ordered by King Henry VIII as a coastal defence against the French. Further along the coast on a promontory is Nothe Fort another coastal defence. Portland Stone was once in great demand and parts of London were built with it after the Great Fire of London, it has even been used in many significant buildings including St Paul’s Cathedral and the United Nations building in New York. Today, some quarries have diversified and become sculpture parks and trusts but Portland limestone is still used today.

Portland is close to Weymouth and shares the Weymouth and Portland Sailing Academy so a jaunt on the water is always possible. The standard of the sailing in Portland is apparent from the outset, and the region hosted many of the sailing events during the 2012 Olympics in Great Britain. From taking lessons to pleasure cruising and enjoying the quiet of Portland with the excitement of Weymouth; a Portland holiday offers plenty of scope for fun and games. It’s close proximity to Weymouth make Portland a great destination for a family holiday, and well deserved days out at the beach.
