Hinton St Mary Holidays |

Choose from a variety of accommodation to suit your stay

Hinton St Mary enjoys an elevated position overlooking the North Dorset countryside and the River Stour. The small village is bursting with charm, thanks in part to the community feel in the village pub and the amount of beautiful thatched properties here.

The village is perhaps most famous for a Roman villa which was uncovered here in the 1960s. Within the ruins a mosaic was found as well as a bust which is now on display in the British Museum. On top of this the small village once appeared on television when a Millennium Garden was created by local people for use by the community. Anyone interested in architecture will enjoy taking in the sights of the Manor House, which used to belong to the nuns of Shaftesbury Abbey and St Peter’s parish church which has a tower that dates back to the 15th Century.

Hinton St Mary is situated in the Blackmore Vale which is recognised as a Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This large expanse of stunning Dorset countryside is perfect for a meandering walk all year round. You’ll be treated to spectacular views wherever you choose to head on your walk but in particular if you head to the higher ground your views will appear to seem endless.

Another fantastic way to explore the surrounding area while on holiday in Hinton St Mary is via the North Dorset Trailway. The network of disused railway lines has been developed into a trailway that passes through a number of towns and villages in North Dorset. There are a wide range of ways that you can enjoy the trail including a relaxing walk, a brisk cycle or even to jump into the saddle and ride along the trail on horseback.

The surrounding towns and villages are almost as equally as beautiful as Hinton St Mary itself. Sturminster Newton is just a mile away and is a thriving centre of activity for the local community with several festivals taking place at The Exchange in the town including the UK Boogie Woogie Festival and the Sturminster Newton Cheese Festival. Also the town’s carnival is part of the West Country Carnival Circuit which is a colourful sight to behold.

Blandford Forum is packed with great activities for everyone to enjoy. History buffs will be fascinated at The Royal Signals Museum found at Blandford Camp with great exhibitions on the technologies used in military communications down the years. For lovers of ale, Hall & Woodhouse Brewery producers of drinks including Tangle Foot and Golden Champion offer tours of their facilities. Shaftesbury is where the famous Hovis advert from 1972 on Gold Hill was filmed and has a museum at the top of the street with artefacts from the advert and the local area.
