One of the most popular areas of South Dorset is Weymouth, a town that was showcased heavily during the 2012 Olympics due to the high standard of sailing that can be enjoyed here. As part of the Olympic legacy, the town was able to redevelop some of the main areas of the town which included creating a spectacular laser light show on the seafront which is a delight to experience during a clear night. The town itself is full of lovely seaside attractions, shops, cafés and restaurants making it a perfect place to relax and treat yourself during a holiday in South Dorset.

South Dorset is home to the county town, Dorchester, and As you would expect from a town steeped in rich history, it is a location that is full of intrigue. A great way to explore the history of the town is to visit the Dorset County Museum, and here you will uncover some of the interesting secrets that this town has hidden within. Even around the town, alongside many of the modern developments, you will find ancient sites and ruins from days gone by as well as attractions such as Maiden Castle. Following the river during a waterside stroll offers peace and serenity as does a visit to Borough Gardens.

Perfectly located on the tip of the Isle of Purbeck, Swanage is another fantastic Dorset town to explore during your visit to the county. The position of the town means that it is ideal for breath-taking coastal walks along the South West Coast Path to take in the fresh sea air. Along the coast path, you will find stunning natural attractions to visit such as Old Harry Rocks, three chalk formations that mark the Eastern end of the Jurassic Coast Path. The town also has several gardens and parks for leisurely strolls and a lovely main shopping area with some great shops, cafés and restaurants.

Further along the southern Dorset coast is the town of West Lulworth, which is famed for its unique cove. The specific geology of the coastline has seen a wonderful circular cove being eroded from the coast that gives a very sheltered and calm appearance and great to explore during your coastal holiday in Dorset. Further along there is a smaller version of this cove called Stair Hole.
