Lying in the heart of West Dorset, Beaminster is a small market town with a waterside location that is located in a bowl shaped valley near the source of the small River Brit. The picturesque town is great for shopping and people watching in one of the cafés and if you are hungry for a lavish and indulgent meal then luckily the area has some great restaurants owned and run by prominent chefs. The foodie culture of Dorset is strong wherever you go which makes Dorset an even more memorable place to visit.

It is also renowned for its tranquillity, wildlife and old water mills and therefore perfect for a relaxing retreat away from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

The Guardian once wrote of Beaminster, “Looking for that perfect Fearnley-Whittingstall-ish, Tamara Drewe-ish West Country town, with a dash of artisan this and that… Well, Beaminster is open for business”

For a bit of culture this historic little town holds quite a long history which you can discover in the Beaminster Museum housed in an old church. The parish church in the town is noted for its exceptional architecture, particularly its tower. Interestingly, the rich history of the town is evident in the 200 listed buildings that can be found here, and the town is an important conservation area.

Just outside of Beaminster is the stunning Elizabethan Mapperton House which has beautiful gardens and might be recognisable as it has been used several times on the big screen. The house has been the home to the Earl of Sandwich since the Restoration of King Charles II. Concerts and various other events are held there. In the town, there are also several other local gardens which are open to the public at certain times throughout the year. Some keen readers may also recognise Beaminster by the descriptions written by Thomas Hardy of “Emminster” in his famous book Tess of the D’Urbervilles.

During the summer Beaminster becomes home to the Beaminster Festival which includes dancing in the square, music and literary talks. If you are planning a Beaminster holiday there’s no better time to visit. The town also plays host to a number of great annual events including the Buckham Fair, The Melplash Agricultural Show, Open Gardens, and the Beaminster Big Day. For family holidays in Beaminster, an interesting and unique attraction in the town is the Whitcombe Disc Golf Course which has hosted the British Open Disc Golf Championships on a number of occasions, and the European Disc Golf Championships in 2003.
